Pat Donahue, Morris Lyene, Thomas Meagher, Charles Duffy, Thomas McGee, John Mitchell, Michael Ireland, Terrance McManus, and Richard O'Gorman
Before passing sentence, the lord judge inquired if the men had anything to say. Thomas Meager spoke for all: "My lord, this is our first offense, but not our last. If you will be easy with us this once, we promise, on our word as gentlemen, to try to do better next time. And next time - sure we won't be fools and get caught." Thereupon the indignant judge sentenced them all to be hanged by the neck until dead-and drawn & quartered. Passionate protests from the world over forced the queen to commute their sentences to transportation for life to far wild Australia. Twenty five years later word reached an astounded queen victoria the Sir Charles Duffy had been elected Prime Minister of Australia. This was the same Charles Duffy that she had sent into exile 25 years before. On the Queen's demand the records of the rest were investigated. The status of each man was revealed to her Majesty.
